My Restaurant Was My Life for 20 Years. Does the World Need It Anymore?




Gabriel Hamilton, the writer and chef/owner of Prune in New York City, gives us a poignant look at how one restaurant closes its doors in the age of coronavirus, letting go of all 30 employees (including her own wife).

She writes: "I had spent 20 years in this place, beginning when I was a grad student fresh out of school, through marriage and children and divorce and remarriage, with funerals and first dates in between; I knew its walls and light switches and faucets as well I knew my own body. It was dark outside when Ashley and I finally rolled down the gates and walked home."

Ultimately, she must decide whether to reopen Prune or just let it sleep forever.
